The Runway

Michigan's Premier Fashion Incubator

The Runway helps fashion designers create a foundation for their business and provides them with the resources needed to produce their collections and ultimately move their product to market.

We accomplish this by providing our Designers-In-Residence with industry expertise, business plan development, an inspiring/ collaborative work space featuring state of the art equipment - and that is just the beginning.

Think it can't be done in Michigan... Think again. The Runway and its designers are out to prove that you do not have to live in NYC in order to make your dreams come true. We aim to set our own industry standard, and to show the world that not only can this state create award-winning cars, but we can also make the outfits to match.

We are now accepting submissions from Michigan-based fashion designers, in all categories, for residency.

CANCELED: Fashion 411: Nha Khanh

CANCELED:
Unfortunately this event is canceled due to flight delays in the Chicago area. Khanh is very disappointed and was looking forward to speaking tonight. We hope to reschedule this event for next year and have begun to process ticket refunds.

Nha Khanh’s designs focus on modern glamour; they’re inspired by art, architecture and, most importantly, nature. The designs are ethereal, meticulously constructed, and host an ease about them that allows for an effortless sensibility. The company offers seasonal “advanced contemporary” Ready-to-Wear, a custom Atelier collection (which hosts one-of-a-kind custom pieces) and a bridal line.

The Nha Khanh mission is to empower women with inner-strength through their clothing while focusing on “feminine elegance with a modern edge.” “Nha”, in Vietnamese, is a feminine word implying ‘light and elegance’, whereas “Khanh” is a masculine word, meaning ‘victory and celebration’. The fusion of the words creates a balance of unison between feminine and masculine. The collection joins lightness and softness of silhouette and fabrication with the celebration of construction and classic forms. This is the fundamental philosophy and creative driving force behind the Nha Khanh label.

Khanh Nguyen, the Creative Director and Designer of the Nha Khanh label, has been surrounded by fashion and art throughout her life. Khanh attended the University of North Texas and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts in Fashion Design. In 2010, the Nha Khanh label was established producing seasonal Ready-to-Wear lines, as well as, custom Atelier service to the public. Designs and manufacturing are 100% based in Dallas, Texas, while the sales, marketing, and PR are based in New York City. The company takes pride in exceptionally well-made garments and strives to push the envelope on innovation, creative, and elegant designs.

Event Details

Amy, an attorney, moved to Detroit in 2007 to pursue her childhood dream of working in the sports industry. The experiences Amy had as a new 'Detroiter' made her fall in love with the city; Detroit quickly became her home.

Living next door to one of the city's most well-known shelters gave her a unique opportunity to get to know the residents. During walks with her dog, Elbie, Amy began to build relationships with a few of the women and learned of the situations that led them to the shelter. Many of the women shared stories of emotional, physical and financial abuse that they suffered. They shared of their decision to leave their situation behind even though it meant seeking relief in a shelter. The inspirational stories they shared with her were the catalyst for creating Rebel Nell. Amy wanted to provide women in shelters with an opportunity to lead an independent life. She believed that employment paired with financial literacy, business education and a focus on life wellness would help them regain confidence in themselves and lead them on the path to success.
